  • Don Bright Electric
  • Alex Reicks at ARC Electric installed a 220VAC charger for our electric car. They came out quickly and on time, did a great job with the installation, and had the city inspector scheduled for the same day. Very pleased with the work.
  • Got a recommendation from our nephew for Nate Isaac, 515-494-6492, (mobile); sole proprietor at Isaac Electric in New Virginia, IA. Nate came out to replace two huge and ugly light fixtures, and installed a fan in the cathedral ceiling. Great work, great guy. My wife told him he needed to charge more!

Exterminators

  • We use Diam and are quite pleased. We have used them for over 10 years, and they are very reliable. They come once a quarter.
  • We’ve had Dan Polson, “The Bug Man,” out for the last couple of years because we had a major problem with carpenter bees burrowing into our deck. Carpenter bees are notoriously hard to get rid of, but Dan and his crew are very thorough and great at following up as necessary. They’ve also been out for carpenter ants, wasp nests, and we’ll be calling them soon to get rid of spiders and (just in case; haven’t seen any) mice.
  • We were unhappy with Preferred Pest Control. We had a couple little garden snakes in our downstairs when we first moved in and they wouldn’t touch them. Apparently, snakes are not their preferred pests.

Fireplace Maintenance

  • I use Kohles & Bach for my gas fireplace cleaning & servicing. They repair and service gas and electric fireplaces, 515-278-2900
  • For Gas fireplace Kohles & Bach as they installed the one we have downstairs.
    For wood burning fireplace – I used ABC Chimney Sweeps but I think they have closed down. Will confirm and update

HVAC Installation & Maintenance

  • Central Iowa Mechanical installed and has serviced ours for 14 years now. Would highly recommend!
  • Des Moines Comfort. 515-266-4660. Easy to schedule, friendly and honest. We use them for HVAC servicing twice a year.
  • Bell Brothers. I think their name was on a sticker on our furnace when we moved in, and we now have a service contract have them. They’ve come out late at night without a word of complaint. Always honest, prompt, offering options when we ask for them, but never pushing expensive and unnecessary work.

Maid Services

  • Molly Maid. We have them out monthly, and they’ve been really helpful. Unless we’re doing a deep and extra thorough cleaning, typically they send three people out, and they’re here for 60-90 minutes. They come on scheduled dates and with the same crew, and the only catch is that we don’t know what time, because that depends on how other jobs are doing. That said, they’re almost always here in the morning, and do great work. We’ve been Molly Maid customers in other cities too, and always had a good experience with them.

  • Our previous painter retired, but we just tried a new one who was quite good and very reasonable. Her name is Amy Tucker Percival, 515-779-5393.
  • Gary Briley Painting, 515-265-8918. Gary works with his daughter Rachael. They do beautiful work.

  • We use Larry’s. They are very good and very reliable, we have found. Also reasonable!
  • Larry’s Windows, 515-244-0560. Easy to schedule, fast and efficient work. We use them for our outdoor windows, including those on the deck and lower-level patio.
